The Boxer

"The Boxer" (study)

On Monday I debated with myself whether to drive all the way out to McGroarty Art Center to paint in the uninstructed class and finally I won. (One of us had to win.. nobody had to lose.)   I mean how often do you get the chance to paint or draw a person... even if it is always just a study.

Julie Snyder had arranged for Jose to be the model which was sort of nice because I've been looking at Jose every day since I won the painting of him dressed as a wine waiter that she had done as a demo for the Valley Artists' Guild several years ago.

I enjoyed chatting with the other painters and seeing Julie's beautiful image emerge... (She says she "makes marks", but actually blocks in huge general shapes then, pulls out a beautiful image with lively colored 'marks' put together to create a realistic image.)  Since I didn't get permission, I won't post her painting, but it was great.

My boxer looks more like Hugh Lawrie than it looked like Jose, but it was a fun morning none-the-less.

I was thinking right now about painting daily.  I actually do paint daily, although I don't post daily.  Often my days - like the last few days - are filled with the OTHER stuff of art.... framing, addressing post cards, assisting with getting exhibitions going, etc.  My husband says that I have gotten a full time job now that I've "retired".   I think he's right. -- It's all good though.

Marian,
Very nice study! I love the strong color combination and your brushworks. I debate myself whether or not to go to CAI uninstructed workshop every Saturday so I know the feeling. But it always feels great to spend a few hours painting from a model. It's good that you can paint daily!

That one sure got my attention. Not only is it so different from your usual work, but the striking colors and that big right glove and menacing look really grab your attention. Love Dad
