The Masters of the American West Show

I mentioned in the last blog that I went with my friend, Sharon Weaver, to the Autry Museum to visit the Masters show.  WOW!
After finishing the book, "Strapless" and being reminded of the importance of the annual Paris Salons to artists, I'm thinking that this type of show is just as important.  Of course art isn't crowded into the show like it was in the Salons - each piece has a place of honor with those winning awards near the front.  Sharon and I looked at each artwork.  We have a different perspective so we each liked or disliked some different work, but it was fun talking to one another about the things we both liked or felt was exceptional on the pieces.  Almost all of the work in the show has already been sold.... and for very, very favorable prices -- the downturn in the economy apparently hasn't affected these buyers!  I only wish I could own one...  I'd love to look at it in wonder and admire the "eye" and vision of the painter each time.
Fortunately I do own a few very nice paintings (very small and nowhere in the same ballpark pricewise) and that's what I like to do.. Look at them in wonder... hoping that my work would also create something that would please a viewer like these on my walls do.
I had a meeting in Pasadena yesterday and went to the Norton Simon to see more wonderful art.  I really enjoyed it, but I was shocked to discover that I think I like the work at the Autry better.    AAAGGHHH   .. that sounds so awful.   Maybe I shouldn't admit it...
What are your thoughts?

I love the Impressionist painters but I agree with you that the new realism is something that excites and transports the old masters into a relevant art movement today. Only in the west is this rebirth so apparent with such a wide range of talented artists. I loved the work we saw at the Autry Museum and want to emulate the great works that we saw there.
