The Challenge
by Marian Fortunati on 12/15/2008 10:45:40 AM

There is a blogger's website that I recently discovered called "Different Strokes From Different Folks" posted by Karin Jurick. I've followed Karin's other blog and somehow missed this one. On it she posts weekly and sometimes biweekly challenge pictures then everyone paints or draws up a storm and sends in their painting. It's quite amazing to see how all of us respond to the same challenge.

When I discovered the blog, she had a photo of some work boots posted, so I decided to give it a go. Initially I found it surprisingly difficult because, of course, the drawing skills still need work. The boots themselves are easier to look at than to draw.. I guess because of the foreshortening. But once I got started, it just made me smile as I was painting. I so enjoyed it.

Here are my work boots. Go to Karin's site to see all the joyous interpretations... some like mine... pretty much what was in the photo... others let their imaginations run wild... By the way... Karin always posts her version too! (And the original photo.)

What fun!!

Hi again Marian,  Your rendition of the boots photograph is very good. I like the way you have placed them in the context of the porch, a setting that is appropriate for work boots that are removed before entering the house. Your softening of the details makes it more of an image about the boots rather than of the boots as we all know exactly what boots look like. The story you present, that of late afternoon lighting suggesting the end of a days work and returning to home and hearth is apparent to me.

I surveyed the site showing all the artists efforts and yours stand out best to me though there were a few that presented a very different story and were well done in that context.

That type of challenge looks like fun to do, and the photo group I am with does something like that on a monthly basis and we all enjoy it.

Best to you, Paul

Great boots. I too liked Paul's perceptive comments. To me they were just work or maybe hunting boots but well depicted. Love, Dad

Those are a lot of work boots. An interesting exercise for 60 plus artists. This is a fun site. Thanks for sharing.

I loved seeing so many interpretations of the same subject. Yours so captured the suede, the long time use, and familiar fit of a pair of boots used to hard work.

You've of late, taken on so many different subjects and I personally stand up and salute you for your bravery and gusto.

Wonderful work and dedication. An inspiration.
