Small Format Fun

Taking a Break
6" x 8"
Oil on RayMar Board

I've found these small format paintings on RayMar boards sort of fun. They allow me to paint something which strikes my fancy - using my observational, drawing and painting skills, but not entering in to a MAJOR project... They're just for fun. I enjoyed trying to get the textures of the rocks and plants into this one. I do need to get back to working on larger formats but for now.. these are an enjoyable pass time.

I posted the one on the left briefly a few days back and one of my friends, Paul, wrote back immediately telling me the various things he liked about it, but suggested that the hiker walking way led the view out of the picture instead of leading it around the painting. He suggested turning the hiker around or having a person sitting. Such a great idea!! The hiker had bothered me all along so... I removed the post and have repainted the figure... Hopefully it's more restful all around now and improves the little painting. Thank you, Paul!

Of course, if you or a friend is a hiker or likes to sit and contemplate our beautiful free spaces and you'd like a little desktop reminder, feel free to drop me an email and make an offer.

Hi Marian,  I think you have it!  The seated figure in more subdued colors and facing inward to the picture works perfect and doesn’t draw too much attention to her as did the red shirt before.   Now there is a construct to the image. If you follow her gaze to the palm on the right, down the trunk to the lower palm, down to the stone and across to the stone on the left bank and back up to the figure, keeping the viewer within the image.  Also, having her gives a size ratio to the rest of the image and lets the viewer assume the sizes of the stones, trees and stream.

Best to you, Paul

Paul gives good advice and is very preceptive.

Marian- these small panels are so deceiving on the web. It's hard to judge the scale because you achieved good detail.
What a fine job you did in portraying a lush, watery locale.

I find it challenging to paint over oil paints. I'm so influenced by what's under it and then it seems I'm patching it up.
Yours doesn't have that feature at all.

I just got my pack of assorted Ray Mar panels and am trying them this weekend.

Keep it up- you're a big inspiration for me.
